MOVED CSSJR 15(RLS) OUT OF COMMITTEE PREVIOUS COMMITTEE ACTION SJR 15 - See Resources minutes dated 3/16/01. ACTION NARRATIVE TAPE 01-4, SIDE A Number 001 CHAIRWOMAN DRUE PEARCE called the Senate Rules Committee meeting to order at 10:56 a.m. Present were Senators Phillips, Therriault, Ellis and Pearce. CHAIRWOMAN PEARCE announced that SJR 15-CHILEAN FARMED SALMON was before the committee, and that Senator Austerman requested the committee to consider adopting a committee substitute, labeled Version J. Three changes were made in Version J. Two "whereas" clauses were deleted, the first on page 2, lines 4-6, and the second on page 2, lines 7-8. In addition, specific language was deleted on page 2, lines 14-16. She asked if anyone had questions about the proposed committee substitute. SENATOR PHILLIPS commented that about 10 or 15 years ago, fish farming was proposed in the legislature and strongly opposed by the commercial fishing industry of Alaska. Now, a resolution is before the legislature that asks Congress to restrict the buying and selling of salmon worldwide. He thinks a consistent public policy regarding wild stock versus fish farming in Alaska is important and that we can't have it both ways. CHAIRWOMAN PEARCE stated the fishing community has been consistent in that it does not support fish farming in Alaska or elsewhere. SENATOR THERRIAULT moved to adopt Version J as the working document before the committee. There being no objection, Version J was adopted in lieu of the original bill. SENATOR THERRIAULT moved to calendar CSSJR 15(RLS) with its accompanying zero fiscal note. There being no objection, the motion carried. There being no further business to come before the committee, CHAIRWOMAN PEARCE adjourned the meeting at 10:58 a.m.
