HOUSE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON MILITARY AND VETERANS' AFFAIRS January 25, 2000 5:05 p.m. COMMITTEE CALENDAR OVERVIEW: DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY & VETERANS' AFFAIRS TAPE(S) 00-02, SIDE(S) A CALL TO ORDER Representative Lisa Murkowski, Chairman, convened the House Special Committee on Military and Veterans' Affairs meeting at 5:05 p.m. PRESENT Committee members present at the call to order were Representatives Murkowski, James, and Porter. Representative(s) Cissna and Foster arrived at 5:10 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., respectively. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION BRIGADIER GENERAL PHILLIP OATES, Commissioner of the State Department of Military & Veterans' Affairs, gave his compliments to the committee for their commitment and efforts relative to military affairs in Alaska. General Oates noted that his number one mission is to execute all peacetime and wartime missions with out the loss of life. He has accomplished this mission. He cited that both the Army and Air National Guards have saved over 150 lives this year. He noted that the Alaska Air National Guard received the Air Force McKay award last year, the Air Forces' most prestigious award, and the committee and state should be proud of them. In the realm of emergency management, General Oates explained that the year 2000 rolled into Alaska with no devastating effects. The Federal Emergency Management Agency noted that Alaska's emergency center was the best prepared in the nation. General Oates talked at length about the National Missile Defense and its effects on the state. He also discussed the Youth Corps program. COMMITTEE ACTION The committee took no action.
