HOUSE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON MILITARY AND VETERANS' AFFAIRS January 20, 2000 4:10 p.m. COMMITTEE CALENDAR COAST GUARD OVERVIEW WITH ADMIRAL BARRETT - 17TH COAST GUARD DISTRICT TAPE(S) 00-01, SIDE(S) A CALL TO ORDER Representative Lisa Murkowski, Chair, convened the House Special Committee on Military and Veterans' Affairs meeting at 4:10 p.m. PRESENT Committee members present at the call to order were Representatives Murkowski, Kott, and Porter. Representative Cissna arrived at 4:17 p.m. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION REAR ADMIRAL THOMAS J. BARRETT, Director of the 17th Coast Guard District, noted that he wears another hat as well in the state, that of Commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Alaska. Admiral Barrett outlined the Coast Guard's missions in Alaska, which includes ship and boating safety, fisheries protection, and environmental protection in the form of oil response and traffic. Admiral Barrett added that the Coast Guard's number one priority is search and rescue operations. Furthermore, in an attempt to increase boating safety awareness, the Coast Guard is working on the implementation of a five-star safety program. Not only would the program educate the general public and commercial operators, Admiral Barrett noted that the commercial groups could use the completion of the five-star program as an endorsement upon their business as an educated and safe operation.
