TAPE(S) 97-5, SIDE(S) A & B 97-6, SIDE(S) A CALL TO ORDER Representative Cowdery, Chairman, convened the House Special Committee on International Trade and Tourism meeting at 3:40 p.m. PRESENT Committee members present at the call to order were Representatives Cowdery, Kott, Phillips, Joule and Elton. Other legislators present were Representative Sanders. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION STEVE SMIRNOFF, Special Assistant, Mayor of Anchorage; Member, Board of Directors, Alaska World Trade Center; and Honorary Consul General, Russian Federation, provided information about Sakhalin Island. WILLIAM HENSLEY, Commissioner, Office of the Commissioner, Department of Commerce and Economic Development, discussed Alaska's history of government to government relations with Sakhalin Island, the state's role of positioning their companies in Sakhalin Island and steps and strategies to met their goals. FRANK DUFFIELD, President, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company, discussed the company's plans and answered questions. DAVE HALL, Director, Marketing and Planning, Alaska Airlines, discussed air flight schedules to Sakhalin and answered questions. CHUCK BECKER, Director, Alaska Export Systems Center; and Member, United States Commercial Service, discussed the center's mission and answered questions. DENNIS MITCHELL, International Manager, Division of Lynden Air Freight, Lynden International, discussed the company's operations in Sakhalin Island. BILL STAMPS, Chairman, International Committee, Alaska Supporters Committee for Alliance, discussed the alliance's support for the project. DENNIS STEFFY, Director, Mining and Petroleum Training Services, University of Alaska, summarized his involvement of the project and answered questions. LEE WAREHAM, International Pathfinder, discussed the timing of the project and answered questions. COMMITTEE ACTION The committee took no action.
