HOUSE HEALTH, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SERVICES STANDING COMMITTEE March 5, 1998 3:03 p.m. COMMITTEE CALENDAR PRESENTATION: MEETING THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME AND FETAL ALCOHOL EFFECT. TAPE 98-19, SIDE A CALL TO ORDER Chairman Con Bunde called the House Health, Education and Social Services Committee to order at 3:03 p.m. PRESENT Committee members present at the call to order were Representatives Bunde, Green, Porter, Dyson and Kemplen. Representative Brice arrived at 3:05 p.m. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION DIANE WORLEY, FAS Coordinator, Department of Health and Social Services, presented the committee members with a recent report from the Alaska FAS Summit held in November as well as national information. MARY LOU CANNEY, birth parent of an FAE child and representative for Parents, Inc., which is a parents support group for children with disabilities primarily focusing on FAS, discussed the myths of FAS and FAE and the realities of raising an FAS or FAE child. DOUG & GLORIA STUART from Homer who are long-time foster parents discussed their experiences of foster parenting two boys with FAS for the past 13 years. Mr. Stuart discussed the importance of education for successful prevention of FAS and dealing with the current generation of affected children which are both a key element to breaking the cycle. COMMITTEE ACTION The committee took no action. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Bunde recessed the meeting at 3:28 p.m. and reconvened the House Health, Education and Social Services Standing Committee to 3:30 p.m. to take action on legislative bills.
