HOUSE HEALTH, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SERVICES STANDING COMMITTEE February 19, 1998 3:04 p.m. COMMITTEE CALENDAR PRESENTATIONS: ALASKA NATIVE HEALTH BOARD UPDATE ON THE ALASKA PUBLIC HEALTH IMPROVEMENT PLAN TAPE 98-10, SIDE A CALL TO ORDER CHAIRMAN CON BUNDE called the House Health, Education and Social Services Standing Committee meeting to order at 3:04 p.m. Chairman Bunde called an at-ease at 3:08 p.m. due to a teleconference malfunction. He reconvened the meeting at 3:13 p.m. PRESENT Committee members present at the call to order were Representatives Bunde, Green, Porter and Dyson. Representative Kemplen arrived as the meeting was in progress. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION PAUL SHERRY, Acting President and Chief Executive Officer, Alaska Native Health Board, outlined the FY 99 legislative priorities of the Alaska Native Health Board. Their priorities include implementation of the rural sanitation 2005 action plan, enhancing health and social services for Alaska's children and youth, including supporting the Governor's proposal "Smart Start for Alaska's Families", and substance abuse services and regulation. PETER NAKAMURA, MD, MPH, Director of the Division of Public Health, Department of Social Services discussed the importance of a public health plan in Alaska, the need for participation in that plan at the community level, and a legislative partnership in the development of that plan.
