Number 014 HJR 17 - MAGNUSON FISHERY CONSRV & MGT ACT The only order of business to come before the committee members was HJR 17, Relating to reauthorization of the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act, sponsored by Representative Navarre. REPRESENTATIVE MIKE NAVARRE, sponsor of HJR 17, said there is a proposed committee substitute which addresses some technical problems. The bill deals with reauthorization and supports the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act. He said there will be some controversy over provisions in the Act. The provision that is specific in the resolution is for the membership of the council to remain within Alaska majority of voting members. He stated that he believes almost all Alaska fishermen will be in support of reauthorization of the Act. There being no further testimony on HJR 17, REPRESENTATIVE DAVIDSON moved to adopt CSHJR 17(FSH). Hearing no objection, it was so ordered. REPRESENTATIVE DAVIDSON indicated he supports the resolution. He believes it is a timely resolution, as we do face some opposition in Congress with regard to the reauthorization of the Magnuson Act. There being no further discussion by committee members, Representative Davidson moved that CSHJR 17(FSH), be passed out of the House Special Committee on Fisheries, with individual recommendations. There being no objection, the motion passed. BILL(S) NOT HEARD HB 251 was scheduled but not heard. CHAIRMAN MOSES adjourned the meeting at 8:50 a.m.
