ALASKA STATE LEGISLATURE  HOUSE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON ECONOMIC  DEVELOPMENT, TRADE AND TOURISM  March 21, 2002 1:10 p.m. COMMITTEE CALENDAR  OVERVIEW: PACIFIC NW ECONOMIC REGION RE: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN REGIONAL PARTNERS TAPES  02-4, SIDE(S) A CALL TO ORDER  REPRESENTATIVE LESIL McGUIRE, Chair, called the House Special Committee on Economic Development, Trade and Tourism to order at 1:10 p.m. PRESENT  Committee members present were Representatives McGuire, Green, Morgan, Dyson, Crawford, Guess, and Rokeberg. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION  BARRY PENNER, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), British Columbia; Vice President Canada, Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER), thanked the committee for allowing the opportunity to address various members of the legislature and introduced the rest of the delegation. Mr. Penner commented on various issues that are similar in Alaska and British Columbia. He offered to work together to try to increase tourism between the two regions. He informed members that he was willing to help write a resolution to the Canadian government regarding cross-border issues. MATT MORRISON, Executive Director, Pacific NorthWest Economic Region, mainly discussed PNWER and how it affects the regional members. Mr. Morrison talked about legislation in Washington State that will help in homeland and binational security. He also discussed the upcoming PNWER meeting in June, addressing the various topics that will be discussed. SUKUMAR PERIWAL, Senior Policy Analyst in the Intergovernmental Relations Secretariat, spoke briefly about British Columbia's role in PNWER and its anticipated involvement. ANNOUNCEMENTS  There were no announcements. COMMITTEE ACTION  The committee took no action.
