CHAIRMAN MILLER brought HB 28 (POSSESSION OF GUNS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY) before the committee. SENATOR PEARCE commented that it was her understanding the legislation is necessary to meet the latest federal mandates and that the state will lose federal school monies if the legislation is not passed. SENATOR MILLER added that he has asked for a legal opinion in light of today's Supreme Court decision which ruled that the federal government cannot pass a law banning weapons in or around schools. However, it is believed that states can ban weapons, but the opinion has been requested to make that clarification. SENATOR PEARCE moved and asked unanimous consent that HB 28 be approved for calendaring. Hearing no objection, it was so ordered.
