SENATOR RIEGER moved and asked unanimous consent that HB 293 (EXTEND COUNCIL ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE) be approved for calendaring at the Chair's discretion. Hearing no objection, it was so ordered. CHAIRMAN JACKO recessed the meeting at 5:43 p.m., calling it called back to order at 5:45 p.m. for the purpose of considering an amendment to HB 293 (EXTEND COUNCIL ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE), which was being proposed by Senator Little. SENATOR LITTLE said that an amendment made in the Finance SCS extends the renewal period past four years. However, there is a provision in state law which prohibits that from happening, so it could only be extended for a period not to exceed four years. She said it was her intention to propose an amendment so that it would comply with Alaska statute. SENATOR HALFORD moved that committee rescind its previous action in approving HB 293 for calendaring. Hearing no objection the motion carried and HB 293 was back before the committee for consideration. Number 040 SENATOR RIEGER pointed out that the bill states that the section referred to by Senator Little, Section 2, is exempt from AS 44.66.010(c), so the bill is in proper form. SENATOR LITTLE then asked why it was desirable to extend the Council for such a lengthy period of time. SENATOR RIEGER explained that the reason for the amendment was to put the expiration date of the Council into an election year so that there would be actually two separate legislatures which would have the option of extending the sunset date. SENATOR HALFORD moved and asked unanimous consent that HB 293 be approved for calendaring at the Chair's discretion. Hearing no objection, it was so ordered.
