"An Act relating to the possession of weapons within the grounds of
or on the parking lot of preschools, elementary, junior high, and
secondary schools or while participating in a school-sponsored
event; requiring the expulsion or suspension of students possessing
deadly weapons on school grounds; and relating to school lockers
and other containers provided in a public or private school by the
school or the school district."

CHAIRMAN MILLER called the Senate Rules Committee meeting to order
at 12:01 p.m.
CHAIRMAN MILLER brought CSHJR 23(FSH) (COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
FISHING QUOTAS) before the committee. Hearing no discussion, he
asked for the pleasure of the committee.
SENATOR SHARP moved and asked unanimous consent that CSHJR 23(FSH)
be approved for calendaring. Hearing no objection, it was so
ordered.
CHAIRMAN MILLER brought HB 28 (POSSESSION OF GUNS ON SCHOOL
PROPERTY) before the committee.
SENATOR PEARCE commented that it was her understanding the
legislation is necessary to meet the latest federal mandates and
that the state will lose federal school monies if the legislation
is not passed. SENATOR MILLER added that he has asked for a legal
opinion in light of today's Supreme Court decision which ruled that
the federal government cannot pass a law banning weapons in or
around schools. However, it is believed that states can ban
weapons, but the opinion has been requested to make that
clarification.
SENATOR PEARCE moved and asked unanimous consent that HB 28 be
approved for calendaring. Hearing no objection, it was so ordered.
CHAIRMAN MILLER brought CSHB 225(RES) (PERMIT TO POSSESS, ETC.,
ELEPHANTS) before the committee. Hearing no discussion, he asked
for the pleasure of the committee.
SENATOR PEARCE moved and asked unanimous consent that CSHB 225(RES)
be approved for calendaring. Hearing no objection, it was so
ordered.
CHAIRMAN MILLER brought SB 124 (HUMAN SERVICES COMMUNITY MATCHING
GRANTS) before the committee. Hearing no discussion, he asked for
the pleasure of the committee.
