CALL TO ORDER
Representative Andrew Halcro, Chairman, convened the House
Transportation Standing Committee meeting at 1:10 p.m.
PRESENT
Committee members present at the call to order were
Representatives Halcro, Masek, Cowdery, Kemplen, Kookesh and
Kohring. Representative Hudson arrived as the meeting was in
progress.
SUMMARY OF INFORMATION
FORMER-GOVERNOR BILL SHEFFIELD, President and Chief Executive
Officer, Alaska Railroad Corporation, Department of Community &
Economic Development, came before the committee and presented a
chronological account of the Canyon and Gold Creek derailments,
dated October 31, 1999 and December 22, 1999, respectively.
ERNEST PIPER, Vice President, Safety and Environment, Alaska
Railroad Corporation, Department of Community & Economic
Development, was also preset and answered questions of the
committee members regarding the two derailments.
GARY P. WOLF, President, Rail Sciences Inc., [3 North Clarendon
Avenue, Avondale Estates, Georgia 30002-1151, (404) 294-5300],
came before the committee and gave a presentation on the
investigative findings of the two derailments.
BRAD L. HAHN, Department of Environmental Conservation, came
before the committee and gave a chronological account of the
department's involvement in the two derailments.
PAUL HAMPTON (PH), CH2M HILL, came before the committee and gave
a presentation on the topography of the surrounding area and
seepage of the fuel leaked from the derailments.
COMMITTEE ACTION
The committee took no action.

The meeting adjourned at 4:14 p.m.
