POSITION STATEMENT: Testified on behalf of the sponsor of SB

ACTION NARRATIVE
TAPE 01-15, SIDE A
Number 0001
CHAIR PETE KOTT called the House Rules Standing Committee
meeting to order at 9:06 a.m. Representatives Kott, Porter,
Kohring, and Joule were present at the call to order.
SB 151-BRISTOL BAY SALMON CLASSIC
CHAIR KOTT announced that the only order of business before the
committee would be SENATE BILL NO. 151, "An Act relating to the
Bristol Bay Salmon Classic; and providing for an effective
date."
Number 0044
TIM GRUSSENDORF, Staff to Senator Hoffman, Alaska State
Legislature, testified on behalf of the sponsor of SB 151. This
bill simply adds the Bristol Bay Salmon Classic to existing
statutes regarding salmon classics. He informed the committee
that the Bristol Bay Native Association thought that a salmon
classic would be another way to offer more scholarships to
children in the district. He explained that this classic would
have people guess how many salmon are commercially harvested
from the five major rivers in Bristol Bay.
CHAIR KOTT, in response to Representative Joule, explained that
SB 151 is being heard because it has to have one hearing in the
House. There being no questions, the public testimony was
closed.
Number 0128
REPRESENTATIVE KOHRING inquired as to the amount of money that
would be raised from this activity.
MR. GRUSSENDORF informed everyone that a committee is being put
together. At this point, the price of the tickets haven't even
been determined. However, there will be no administrative fees
to the corporation that runs the classic. Mr. Grussendorf said
that the current thought is to mirror the Nenana Ice Classic.
In further response to Representative Kohring, Mr. Grussendorf
specified that the money raised will be used for college
scholarships.
REPRESENTATIVE KOHRING remarked that it is interesting that such
[events] would require authorization from the legislature.
Although he realized that state statute requires the
legislature's authorization, he felt that it would be more
appropriate to do this based on a local decision. In
conclusion, Representative Kohring said that he believes it's
great that this money is being raised locally versus coming to
the government for funding.
Number 0242
REPRESENTATIVE JOULE moved to report SB 151 out of committee
with individual recommendations and the accompanying zero fiscal
note. There being no objection, SB 151 was reported from the
House Rules Standing Committee.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business before the committee, the House
Rules Standing Committee meeting was adjourned at 9:11 a.m.
