SUMMARY OF INFORMATION
REAR ADMIRAL THOMAS J. BARRETT, Director of the 17th Coast Guard
District, noted that he wears another hat as well in the state,
that of Commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Alaska. Admiral Barrett
outlined the Coast Guard's missions in Alaska, which includes ship
and boating safety, fisheries protection, and environmental
protection in the form of oil response and traffic. Admiral Barrett
added that the Coast Guard's number one priority is search and
rescue operations. Furthermore, in an attempt to increase boating
safety awareness, the Coast Guard is working on the implementation
of a five-star safety program. Not only would the program educate
