Commission
ACTION NARRATIVE
As arranged in advance, Gayle Horetski, Committee Counsel to
the House Judiciary Committee, placed a telephone call to a
meeting of the Anchorage Crime Commission at approximately
4:15 p.m. Present with Ms. Horetski was Vice Chair of the
House Judiciary Committee, Jeannette James. Chairman Brian
Porter joined the conference call at approximately 4:20 p.m.
Also present was Jay Nelson, staff to Representative Cliff
Davidson.
Members of the Anchorage Crime Commission expressed their
support for various legislative measures which may be
considered by the legislature during this session. Among
the issues discussed were a conspiracy law, "boot camp"
programs for young offenders, "waiver" of certain juvenile
offenders from children's to adult court, tougher penalties
for auto theft, laws requiring parental responsibility for
young offenders, greater public access to the records of
children's court proceedings, and the flexibility to send
sentenced prisoners to out-of-state correctional facilities
if Alaska's institutions are overcrowded.
Among the members of the Commission who spoke were David
Cuddy, chairman, Superior Court Judge Ralph Moody (retired),
and Cal Williams. Chairman Porter thanked the Commission
members for their interest in criminal justice legislation,
and pledged to work with them during the session.
The telephone call ended at approximately 4:45 p.m.
