CALL TO ORDER
REPRESENTATIVE FRED DYSON, Chair, convened the House Health,
Education and Social Services Standing Committee meeting at 3:05
p.m.
PRESENT
Committee members present were Representatives Dyson, Wilson,
Coghill, Joule, Stevens, and Kohring. Senators Davis and Ward
were also in attendance.
SUMMARY OF INFORMATION
CHAIR DYSON went over the House Health, Education, and Social
Services Committee rules, the next meeting, and the committee's
interest in sponsoring a bill.
KAREN PERDUE, Commissioner, Department of Health and Social
Services, presented the first PowerPoint presentation in the HES
committee room, which reviewed the last decade in Alaska,
problems that face Alaska today, and how the department is
addressing those problems.
NANCY DAVIS, Chief, Nursing Section, DPH, DHSS, presented an
overview of the Division of Public Health. Using the
PowerPoint, she showed pictures of the new public health
facility in Anchorage, the history of public health in Alaska,
and trends in Alaska public health.
DR. JOHN MIDDAUGH, Chief, Epidemiology Section, DPH, DHSS,
presented an overview of the issues affecting epidemiology in
Alaska and answered questions from the committee.
DR. BERNARD JILLY, Chief, Laboratories, DPH, DHSS, presented an
overview of the threat of biological terrorism within the state
of Alaska and answered questions from the committee.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The continuation of the Division of Public Health overview will
be held on January 18, 2001.
COMMITTEE ACTION
The committee took no action.
ADJOURNMENT
CHAIR DYSON adjourned the House Health, Education and Social
Services Standing Committee meeting at 5:30 p.m.
