137,  "An Act  extending the  termination  date of  the Board  of                                                               
Certified Direct-Entry  Midwives; and providing for  an effective

Anchorage, Alaska* { found three areas  for the board to work on.                                                               
The first was    Process should  be final in a  month. The second                                                               
area of  concern was the time  for an investigation and  what the                                                               
department was  doing. The last was    wanted to  bring standards                                                               
to national standards  and deferred due to cost.  Working in that                                                               
SENATOR  STEVENS appreciate  the  explanation. He  asked to  hear                                                               
from the department on the time for an investigation.

extension  is  in response  to  issue  found but  cannot  provide                                                               
details due to it being  confidential. Believe it is important to                                                               
provide more oversight.                                                                                                         
SENATOR STEVENS appreciate the explanation.  Longer if all issues                                                               
MS. CURTIS hope so but recommend based on the audit findings.

MS.  CURTIS  replied  it  is  part of  her  budget  Next  is  the

CHAIR COSTELLO two year extension  adequate to resolve the issues                                                               
or would one year be preferable.                                                                                                
MS. CURTIS  lowest can  only be  two year  extension because   It                                                               
will be an audit next year.

Believe  providing oversight  next year  is the  most appropriate

MS. CURTIS  said lots of  things can affect an  investigation. We                                                               
look  at  unjustified  inactivity.   Part  of  the  investigation

Businesses, and Professional Licensing*  Juneau, Alaska* { uptick                                                               
in volume and  complexity of investigations and  resources do not                                                               
always keep  up. We  need additional  resources to  meet internal                                                               
reporting  goals. State  auditors     and  we  have fallen  short                                                               
because of resource  needs. The division has been  working to add                                                               
a  third  senior  investigator,  incorporated  accountability  in                                                               
investigator   , and additional flexibility.
