SR 3-CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH 1:31:50 PM CHAIR DUNBAR announced the consideration of SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 3 Recognizing March 2024 as Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness Month in Alaska to raise awareness of the need for research, screening programs, and access to care for individuals who suffer from chronic kidney disease. This is the final discussion on SR 3. The initial hearing was on February 20. The intention is to look to the will of the committee and take action on the resolution. He invited Senator Gray-Jackson to make closing comments. 1:32:23 PM SENATOR GRAY-JACKSON emphasized that the United States has more than 40 million people with kidney disease, which is equivalent to the entire population of California. She said more people will die from kidney disease than breast cancer or prostate cancer this year. SR 3 seeks to reduce the impact of chronic disease by increasing awareness and screening. SENATOR GRAY-JACKSON listed the demographics of Alaskans suffering from kidney disease. Out of 736,000 Alaskans, the population breakdown is: - American Indian / Alaska Native 5.1 percent, totaling 37,000; - Asian 2.1 percent, totaling 15,000; - Black 4.3 percent, totaling 32,000; - Hawaiian / Pacific Islander 2.7 percent, totaling 20,000; - Hispanic 3.2 percent, totaling 23,000; - multi-racial 3.3 percent, totaling 24,000; and - [White] 3.9 percent, totaling 29,000 1:34:25 PM CHAIR DUNBAR solicited the will of the committee. 1:34:27 PM SENATOR GIESSEL moved to report SR 3, work order 33-LS1112\A, from committee with individual recommendations and attached zero fiscal note(s). 1:34:45 PM CHAIR DUNBAR found no objection and SR 3 was reported from the Senate Community and Regional Affairs Standing Committee.
