SR 3-CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH
1:31:50 PM
CHAIR DUNBAR announced the consideration of SENATE RESOLUTION
NO. 3 Recognizing March 2024 as Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness
Month in Alaska to raise awareness of the need for research,
screening programs, and access to care for individuals who
suffer from chronic kidney disease.
This is the final discussion on SR 3. The initial hearing was on
February 20. The intention is to look to the will of the
committee and take action on the resolution. He invited Senator
Gray-Jackson to make closing comments.
1:32:23 PM
SENATOR GRAY-JACKSON emphasized that the United States has more
than 40 million people with kidney disease, which is equivalent
to the entire population of California. She said more people
will die from kidney disease than breast cancer or prostate
cancer this year. SR 3 seeks to reduce the impact of chronic
disease by increasing awareness and screening.
SENATOR GRAY-JACKSON listed the demographics of Alaskans
suffering from kidney disease. Out of 736,000 Alaskans, the
population breakdown is:
- American Indian / Alaska Native 5.1 percent, totaling 37,000;
- Asian 2.1 percent, totaling 15,000;
- Black 4.3 percent, totaling 32,000;
- Hawaiian / Pacific Islander 2.7 percent, totaling 20,000;
- Hispanic 3.2 percent, totaling 23,000;
- multi-racial 3.3 percent, totaling 24,000; and
- [White] 3.9 percent, totaling 29,000

fiscal note(s).
1:34:45 PM

Senate Community and Regional Affairs Standing Committee.
