Representative Tuck moved and asked unanimous consent that Representative Knopp be excused from a call of the House today. Representative Eastman objected. The question being: "Shall Representative Knopp be excused today?" Representative Tuck moved and asked unanimous consent that the invocation be spread on the journal. There being no objection, it was so ordered. Almighty God, we thank you for the life of Lieutenant Governor John Coghill and his service to the people of Alaska. Guide us to share in his love of this state and his faithfulness to you, our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer. May his name live forever in our hearts and in the history of our state. We pray this by all the names by which you are known to us. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Representative Merrick. CERTIFICATION OF THE JOURNAL Representative Tuck moved and asked unanimous consent that the journal for the 29th and 30th legislative days be approved as certified by the Chief Clerk. There being no objection, it was so ordered. SPEAKER Representative Tuck moved and asked unanimous consent that nominations be opened for Speaker of the House. There being no objection, it was so ordered. Representative Tuck nominated Representative Edgmon as Speaker of the House. Representative Johnson nominated Representative Talerico as Speaker of the House. Representative Tuck moved and asked unanimous consent that nominations be closed. There being no objection, it was so ordered. The question being: "Shall Representative Edgmon be elected Speaker of the House?" Representative Foster appointed Representatives Stutes and Thompson to escort the Speaker to the rostrum. The Speaker delivered brief opening remarks regarding the Thirty-first Alaska State Legislature. * * * * * The Speaker requested that members stand for a moment of silence to honor the life of former Lieutenant Governor John B. "Jack" Coghill. * * * * * Pursuant to Uniform Rule 1(e), the Speaker appointed the following members to the Committee on Committees: Representative Edgmon, Chair Representative Kopp Representative Thompson Representative Foster Representative Wilson Representative Johnston Representative Stutes The Speaker appointed Representatives Fields and Merrick to advise the Governor that the House is in session and ready to do business. 2019-02-14 House Journal Page 0086 The Speaker appointed Representatives Hopkins and Shaw to advise the Senate that the House is in session and ready to do business. The Speaker stated that, without objection, the House would recess; and so, the House recessed at 10:50 a.m. AFTER RECESS The Speaker called the House back to order at 1:14 p.m. ANNOUNCEMENTS House committee schedules are published under separate cover.
