Senators Cowdery, Donley, Taylor, Therriault, Wilken were absent. The prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Mike Rose of the Bethel Assembly of God. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the prayer be spread. Without objection, it was so ordered. Heavenly Father, thank You for this day and for Your mercy which is new every morning. Lord, thank You for the wonder of Your creation, and the opportunity for us to enjoy it. I praise You that we are not part of a cosmic accident, but we have been created in Your image, and after Your likeness. Lord, thank You that we have the privilege to live in this great nation with the freedoms that we enjoy. Help us to never take for granted the blessings that have been lavished upon us. Lord, grant wisdom, understanding and discernment to each Senator. May our descendants in the future prosper and be blessed because of the decisions that are being made in the present. Lord, help each one of us to look beyond the immediate, and plan prudently for the future. Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent that the Senate move down the calendar to Unfinished Business. Without objection, the Senate proceeded to: Unfinished Business Senator Hoffman moved and asked unanimous consent to be excused from a call of the Senate from 12:30 p.m. on April 11. Recess Senator Leman moved and asked unanimous consent that the Senate stand in recess to the Joint Session. Without objection, the Senate recessed at 10:58 a.m. 2001-04-11 Senate Journal Page 1063 After Recess Joint Session in the House Speaker Porter called the House to order and in accordance with Uniform Rule 51 turned the gavel over to President Halford, who called the Joint Session to order at 11:06 a.m. The purpose of the Joint Session was to hear an address by the Honorable Ted Stevens, United States Senator. Senator Leman moved and asked unanimous consent that the roll call of the Senate be waived and all members be shown as present. Without objection, it was so ordered. Representative James moved and asked unanimous consent that the roll call of the House be waived and all members be shown as present. Without objection, it was so ordered. President Halford appointed Representative McGuire and Senator Phillips to escort Senator Ted Stevens to the Joint Session. The Senate Sergeant at Arms, Christian Blalock, announced Senator Stevens' entrance to the House Chamber. The Honorable Ted Stevens was escorted to the rostrum and introduced by President Halford. United States Senator Ted Stevens delivered his address. (A prepared text was not submitted for publication.) Following his address, there was a question and answer period. The Honorable Ted Stevens received a standing ovation and was escorted from the chamber by Senator Phillips and Representative McGuire.
