00 CS FOR SENATE BILL NO. 151(EDC) 01 "An Act relating to head lice and bacterial conjunctivitis in public schools; and 02 providing for an effective date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 14.30 is amended by adding a new section to read: 05 Sec. 14.30.144. Head lice and bacterial conjunctivitis policy in public 06 schools. Each school district shall adopt a policy regarding 07 (1) students with live head lice; and 08 (2) bacterial conjunctivitis. 09 * Sec. 2. AS 14.30.144 is amended by adding new subsections to read: 10 (b) A school district that has not adopted a policy under (a)(1) of this section 11 shall allow a student found with live head lice to remain in the student's classroom 12 until the end of the school day, but following that school day the student may not 13 return to the classroom until a school nurse or the school nurse's designee, or other 14 health care provider if the school does not employ a school nurse, has inspected the
01 student's hair and confirmed the absence of live head lice. Upon discovering live head 02 lice in a student's hair, the student's school shall 03 (1) provide the student's parent or guardian with information on how to 04 treat head lice; and 05 (2) notify the parent or guardian of each student in the classroom of the 06 head lice in a manner that protects each student's privacy. 07 (c) A school district that has not adopted a policy under (a)(2) of this section 08 shall require a student found to have bacterial conjunctivitis to immediately leave the 09 student's classroom and may not allow the student to return to school for at least 24 10 hours after starting medical treatment for the bacterial conjunctivitis. Upon 11 discovering that a student has bacterial conjunctivitis, the student's school shall notify 12 the parent or guardian of each student in the classroom of the bacterial conjunctivitis 13 in a manner that protects each student's privacy. 14 (d) In this section, "school district" has the meaning given in AS 14.30.350. 15 * Sec. 3. Section 2 of this Act takes effect 180 days after the effective date of sec. 1 of this 16 Act.
