00 HOUSE BILL NO. 125 01 "An Act relating to membership of the Board of Fisheries." 02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 * Section 1. AS 16.05.221(a) is amended to read: 04 (a) For purposes of the conservation and development of the fishery resources 05 of the state, there is created the Board of Fisheries composed of seven members 06 appointed by the governor, subject to confirmation by a majority of the members of 07 the legislature in joint session. [THE GOVERNOR SHALL APPOINT EACH 08 MEMBER ON THE BASIS OF INTEREST IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS, GOOD 09 JUDGMENT, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITY IN THE FIELD OF ACTION OF 10 THE BOARD, AND WITH A VIEW TO PROVIDING DIVERSITY OF INTEREST 11 AND POINTS OF VIEW IN THE MEMBERSHIP.] The appointed members shall be 12 residents of the state and shall be appointed without regard to political affiliation or 13 geographical location of residence. The commissioner is not a member of the Board of 14 Fisheries, but shall be ex officio secretary. The governor shall appoint the members 15 as follows:
01 (1) two members who represent commercial fishing; 02 (2) two members who represent sport fishing; 03 (3) two members who represent subsistence fishing, from a list of 04 four names submitted by the Alaska Federation of Natives; however, the 05 governor may reject the list and request that another list be submitted; 06 (4) one member who represents the scientific community, from a 07 list of three names submitted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric 08 Administration; however, the governor may reject the list and request that 09 another list be submitted. 10 * Sec. 2. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to 11 read: 12 TRANSITION. A person who is a member of the Board of Fisheries on the day before 13 the effective date of this Act continues to serve until the expiration of the member's term. An 14 appointment for a vacancy that occurs on or after the effective date of this Act shall be in 15 accordance with AS 16.05.221(a), as amended by sec. 1 of this Act.
