00 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 26 01 Urging the United States Congress to propose an amendment to the United States 02 Constitution providing that the Supreme Court of the United States may be composed of 03 not more than nine justices. 04 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 05 WHEREAS an independent United States Supreme Court is an essential element of 06 the checks and balances designed to protect the constitutional rights of every Alaskan; and 07 WHEREAS the United States Supreme Court has been composed of nine justices for 08 more than 150 years; and 09 WHEREAS the President of the United States and the United States Congress should 10 not possess the ability to undermine the independence of the United States Supreme Court by 11 increasing the number of justices serving on the Supreme Court; 12 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature urges the United States 13 Congress to propose an amendment to the United States Constitution providing that the 14 Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of not more than nine Justices. 15 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Kamala D.
