00 HOUSE BILL NO. 24 01 "An Act requiring certain school districts to give teachers who are nursing mothers 02 reasonable breaks and a location to express breast milk." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 14.20 is amended by adding a new section to read: 05 Sec. 14.20.098. Reasonable break time and location for nursing mothers. 06 (a) Subject to (b) of this section, a school district shall, for a period of one year 07 beginning on the date of the birth of her nursing child, provide a teacher who is a 08 nursing mother 09 (1) reasonable break periods to express breast milk; and 10 (2) a private and sanitary place in the workplace, other than a 11 bathroom, to express breast milk. 12 (b) Except as may be required otherwise by a contract, a school district is not 13 required to 14 (1) pay a teacher for a break under (a) of this section;
01 (2) comply with (a) of this section, if 02 (A) the school district employs fewer than 50 persons; and 03 (B) the difficulty and expense of meeting the requirements 04 under (a) of this section, when considered in relation to the school district's 05 financial resources, are significant and would cause the school district undue 06 financial hardship. 07 (c) Nothing in this section prohibits a school district from providing a teacher 08 who is a nursing mother with accommodations in addition to those required under (a) 09 of this section.
