01 "An Act relating to the Board of Veterinary Examiners; extending the termination date                                   
02 of the Board of Veterinary Examiners; and providing for an effective date."                                             
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1. AS 08.03.010(c)(22) is amended to read:                                                               
05                 (22)  Board of Veterinary Examiners (AS 08.98.010) - June 30, 2025                                  
06       [2017].                                                                                                           
07    * Sec. 2. AS 08.98.010 is amended to read:                                                                         
08            Sec. 08.98.010. Creation and membership of the board. There is created the                                 
09       Board of Veterinary Examiners composed of five members appointed by the governor                                  
10 and approved by the legislature. Four members shall be licensed veterinarians who                                       
11 have been in active practice in the state for at least five years preceding appointment,                            
12 one of whom shall reside in a community with a population of less than 7,500, and                                   
13 one shall be a public member. A person may not serve on the board who is, or was                                        
14 during the two years immediately preceding appointment, a member of a faculty,                                          

01       board of trustees, or advisory board of a veterinary school.                                                      
02    * Sec. 3. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to                          
03 read:                                                                                                                   
04 REPORT ON VETERINARY SERVICES. The Board of Veterinary Examiners shall                                                  
05 submit to the legislature an electronic report on the standards and availability of veterinary                          
06 services in the state, including rural areas. On or before January 31, 2020, the board shall                            
07 submit the report required under this section to the senate secretary and the chief clerk of the                        
08 house of representatives and notify the legislature that the report is available.                                       
09    * Sec. 4. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to                          
10 read:                                                                                                                   
11 TRANSITION. Notwithstanding AS 08.98.010, as amended by sec. 2 of this Act, a                                           
12 person who is a member of the Board of Veterinary Examiners on the effective date of this                               
13 Act may serve the remainder of the member's term. The governor shall make appointments                                  
14 under AS 08.98.010, as amended by sec. 2 of this Act, to fill vacancies and expired terms on                            
15 the Board of Veterinary Examiners that occur on or after the effective date of this Act.                                
16    * Sec. 5. This Act takes effect immediately under AS 01.10.070(c).
