AS 18.80.200 is amended by adding a new subsection to read: 05 (c) Nothing in this chapter is intended to prohibit a private employer from 06 granting an employment preference to a member of the national guard or a veteran 07 when hiring an employee. In this subsection, 08 (1) "member of the national guard" means a person presently serving 09 as a member in good standing in the national guard; 10 (2) "veteran" means a person who was discharged under honorable 11 conditions from service in 12 (A) the armed forces of the United States; 13 (B) a reserve unit of the armed forces of the United States; 14 (C) the Alaska Territorial Guard;

01 (D) the Alaska Army National Guard; 02 (E) the Alaska Air National Guard; or 03 (F) the Alaska Naval Militia. 04 * Sec. 2. AS 23 is amended by adding a new chapter to read: 05 Chapter 55. Employment of Members of the National Guard and Veterans. 06 Sec. 23.55.010. National guard member and veteran hiring preference 07 allowed. A private employer may grant an employment preference to a member of the 08 national guard or a veteran when hiring an employee. In this section, 09 (1) "member of the national guard" means a person presently serving 10 as a member in good standing in the national guard; 11 (2) "veteran" means a person who was discharged under honorable 12 conditions from service in 13 (A) the armed forces of the United States; 14 (B) a reserve unit of the armed forces of the United States; 15 (C) the Alaska Territorial Guard; 16 (D) the Alaska Army National Guard; 17 (E) the Alaska Air National Guard; or 18 (F) the Alaska Naval Militia. 19 * Sec. 3. AS 39.25.159(f)(3) is amended to read: 20 (3) "member of the national guard" means a person who 21 (A) is presently serving as a member in good standing in [OF] 22 the national guard; or 23 (B) was released from service in the national guard under 24 honorable conditions [ALASKA NATIONAL GUARD AND WHO HAS AT 25 LEAST EIGHT YEARS OF SERVICE IN THE ALASKA NATIONAL 26 GUARD];
