00 HOUSE BILL NO. 204 01 "An Act extending the school term; and providing for an effective date." 02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 * Section 1. AS 14.03.030 is amended to read: 04 Sec. 14.03.030. School term. A school term begins and ends on the dates fixed 05 by the governing body of a school district. A school term shall include not less than 06 190 [180] days in session unless, with the approval of the commissioner, 07 (1) a day used for in-service training of teachers is substituted for a day 08 in session, up to a maximum of 10 days; 09 (2) an "emergency closure day" is substituted for a day in session 10 because of conditions posing a threat to the health or safety of students; or 11 (3) the school board adopts a different school term that includes at 12 least 780 [740] hours of instruction and study periods for pupils in kindergarten and 13 [,] first grade [, SECOND GRADE, AND THIRD GRADE] and at least 1,000 [900] 14 hours of instruction and study periods for pupils in grades two [FOUR] through 12 if 15 the commissioner finds that the school board has submitted an acceptable plan under

01 which students will receive the approximate educational equivalent of a 190-day [180- 02 DAY] term. 03 * Sec. 2. AS 14.45.110(b) is amended to read: 04 (b) A religious or other private school that elects to comply with AS 14.45.100 05 - 14.45.130 shall maintain monthly attendance records for each student enrolled in the 06 school, shall operate on a regular schedule, excluding reasonable holidays and 07 vacations, during at least 190 [180] days of the year, shall make an annual report to the 08 commissioner of the number of students in each grade and the school calendar, and 09 shall comply with the provisions concerning missing children under AS 14.30.700 - 10 14.30.720. 11 * Sec. 3. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to 12 read: 13 APPLICABILITY; SCHOOL TERM. AS 14.03.030, as amended by sec. 1 of this Act, 14 and AS 14.45.110(b), as amended by sec. 2 of this Act, apply to collective bargaining 15 agreements and school employment contracts that take effect after June 30, 2018. 16 * Sec. 4. This Act takes effect July 1, 2018.
