AS 44.12 is amended by adding a new section to read: 04 Sec. 44.12.087. Great Alaska Good Friday Earthquake Remembrance 05 Day. Great Alaska Good Friday Earthquake Remembrance Day is established on 06 March 27 of each year to honor those who died throughout the state in earthquakes, 07 tsunamis, and landslides after the most powerful recorded earthquake in North 08 America, and also to honor those who died attempting to save others. The devastating 09 consequences and efforts of recovery after the 1964 earthquake provided many lessons 10 that should not be forgotten and should be used to develop a safer human environment 11 in the state and to increase public awareness, which is the most cost-effective and 12 critical aspect of preparation for the next earthquake. The governor shall issue a 13 proclamation to commemorate Great Alaska Good Friday Earthquake Remembrance

01 Day and shall direct that the Alaska flag be flown at half-mast on that day. The day 02 may be observed by suitable observances and exercises by civic groups and the public.
