00 SENATE BILL NO. 1 01 "An Act establishing May 10 of each year as Alaska Mining Day." 02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 * Section 1. AS 44.12 is amended by adding a new section to read: 04 Sec. 44.12.094. Alaska Mining Day. Alaska Mining Day is established on 05 May 10 of each year to recognize and honor the intrepid individuals and industry that 06 played an enormous role in settling and developing the territory and the state and that 07 continue to contribute to the economy of the state. Mining served as a driving force 08 behind the creation of the Alaska Railroad in the early 20th century, and the ongoing 09 development of the mineral resources of the state, including rare earth minerals, 10 contributes to the security and economy of the state and the nation. Alaska Mining 11 Day may be observed by educational and celebratory events, projects, and activities to 12 increase public awareness of and appreciation for mining and miners in the state and 13 the many uses for the minerals mined in the state.
