00Enrolled HB 180 01 Relating to the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy; and providing for an effective date. 02 _______________ 03 * Section 1. AS 14.30.745(a) is amended to read: 04 (a) Except as provided in (b) of this section, on or before January 15 and 05 July 15 of each year, a school district shall provide to the director of the Alaska 06 Military [CHALLENGE] Youth Academy, operated by the Department of Military 07 and Veterans' Affairs for the purpose of educating and training youth, a biannual 08 report containing the name, last known address, and dates of attendance of a student 09 who 10 (1) is at least 15 years of age but less than 19 years of age; 11 (2) was enrolled but is no longer enrolled in a school in the district; 12 (3) has not provided school transfer or graduation information to a 13 school in the district; and

01 (4) has not received a high school diploma or general educational 02 development certificate. 03 * Sec. 2. AS 44.35.020 is amended by adding a new subsection to read: 04 (c) The Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs may establish and 05 operate the Alaska Military Youth Academy as part of the National Guard Youth 06 Challenge Program established under 32 U.S.C. 509 to assist in intervening in and 07 reclaiming the lives of at-risk youth in the state and to produce graduates of the 08 program with the values, skills, education, and self-discipline necessary to succeed as 09 adults. 10 * Sec. 3. AS 14.30.740 is repealed. 11 * Sec. 4. This Act takes effect January 1, 2014.
