00 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 19 01 Proclaiming September 24, 2012, to be United States Marshals Day. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS, following passage by the United States Congress of the United States 04 Judiciary Act of 1789, which established the federal judicial system and authorized the 05 appointment of one United States Marshal for each of the newly created federal judicial 06 districts, President George Washington, on September 24, 1789, signed the Act into law and 07 directed the appointment of the first 13 United States Marshals; and 08 WHEREAS, under sec. 27 of the 1789 Act, United States Marshals are directed to 09 "execute throughout the district all lawful precepts" and are given "power to command all 10 necessary assistance," including the appointment of deputies, for that purpose; and 11 WHEREAS, for more than 200 years, United States Marshals and their deputies have 12 executed warrants, registered enemy aliens in time of war, ensured the safe conduct of judicial 13 proceedings, worked to apprehend dangerous fugitives, and protected the President of the 14 United States; and 15 WHEREAS United States Marshals and their deputies began upholding the law in the 16 Territory of Alaska in 1884 and have continued upholding it since then with dedication,

01 integrity, and personal sacrifice; and 02 WHEREAS eight deputy United States Marshals have died in the line of duty while 03 serving either the Territory of Alaska or the State of Alaska; and 04 WHEREAS the service of the United States Marshals and their deputies has been 05 vital to the safety and prosperity of communities and individuals in both the Territory of 06 Alaska and the State of Alaska; and 07 WHEREAS United States Marshals and their deputies have served the nation, the 08 Territory of Alaska, and the State of Alaska with valor for many generations and continue to 09 do so; 10 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature proclaims September 24, 2012, 11 to be United States Marshals Day in honor of the longstanding service of the United States 12 Marshals and their deputies.
