00Enrolled SCR 17 01 Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America and 02 proclaiming 2012 as the Year of the Girl. 03 _______________ 04 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 05 WHEREAS March 12, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scout 06 movement, which began on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, when Juliette "Daisy" 07 Gordon Low organized a group of 18 girls and provided the girls with the opportunity to 08 develop physically, mentally, and spiritually; and 09 WHEREAS, for 100 years, the Girl Scouts have helped millions of girls and women 10 develop courage, confidence, and character, so that those girls and women could act to make 11 the world a better place; and 12 WHEREAS the award-winning Girl Scout Leadership Experience helps girls discover 13 themselves, establish values, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better 14 place; and 15 WHEREAS the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in the Girl Scouts, requires 16 a girl to make a measurable and sustainable difference in the girl's community by assessing a 17 need, designing a solution, finding the resources and support to achieve that solution,

01 completing the project, and inspiring others to sustain it; and 02 WHEREAS the Girl Scout Gold Award honors leadership in the Girl Scout tradition, 03 and, as high school students, Girl Scout Gold Award recipients have already changed the 04 world; and 05 WHEREAS the Girl Scout programs in science, technology, engineering, math, 06 environmental awareness, healthy living, financial literacy, and global citizenship help girls 07 develop a solid foundation in leadership; and 08 WHEREAS, since its founding in 2000, the Girl Scout Research Institute has become 09 an internationally recognized center for original research, research reviews, and surveys that 10 provide significant insights into the lives of girls; and 11 WHEREAS, through the dedication, time, and talent of volunteers of different 12 backgrounds, abilities, and areas of expertise, the Girl Scouts of Alaska serves more than 13 6,000 girls in grades kindergarten through 12 across the state; and 14 WHEREAS more than 50,000,000 American women are Girl Scout alumnae, 15 3,200,000 girls and adult volunteers are active members of the Girl Scouts, and the Girl 16 Scouts of the United States of America is the largest member of the World Association of Girl 17 Guides and Girl Scouts, a global movement of more than 10,000,000 girls in 145 countries; 18 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature celebrates the Girl Scouts of the 19 United States of America for 100 years of leadership and expertise and proclaims 2012 the 20 Year of the Girl. 21 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to Marge Stoneking, Chief Executive Officer, 22 Girl Scouts of Alaska; Jane Angvik, Chair and Lifetime Member, Girl Scouts of Alaska; Mary 23 Siroky, First Vice Chair, Girl Scouts of Alaska; Lynda Zaugg, Second Vice Chair and 24 Lifetime Member, Girl Scouts of Alaska; Mary Killorin, Secretary, Girl Scouts of Alaska; 25 Linda Freed, Treasurer and Lifetime Member, Girl Scouts of Alaska; and the Honorable Lisa 26 Murkowski and the Honorable Mark Begich, U.S. Senators, and the Honorable Don Young, 27 U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in Congress.
