00 HOUSE BILL NO. 112 01 "An Act requiring successful completion of a civics examination consisting of questions 02 from the civics portion of the United States naturalization examination; and providing 03 for an effective date." 04 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 05 * Section 1. AS 14.03 is amended by adding a new section to read: 06 Sec. 14.03.076. Secondary student civics testing. (a) In addition to the 07 requirements in AS 14.03.075, a student may not be issued a secondary school 08 diploma unless the student successfully completes a civics examination consisting of 09 questions from the civics portion of the examination for naturalization required for 10 immigration into the United States under 8 U.S.C. 1446. 11 (b) At least once during each school year, the governing body of a school 12 district shall provide and score the civics examination required under (a) of this 13 section and shall provide opportunities for retesting and remediation for students who 14 fail the examination.

01 (c) The department shall develop the civics examination required under (a) of 02 this section. 03 (d) Notwithstanding (a) of this section, a student who is a child with a 04 disability and who does not successfully complete the examination required under (a) 05 of this section, with or without accommodation, after one retest, is eligible to receive a 06 diploma if the student successfully completes an alternative assessment required by 07 the student's individualized education program or required in the education plan 08 developed for the student under 29 U.S.C. 794; an alternative assessment must, to the 09 maximum extent possible, conform to the standards established for the civics portion 10 of the naturalization examination. 11 * Sec. 2. This Act takes effect July 1, 2012.
