01 "An Act relating to the administration of prescribed remedies and dietary supplements                                   
02 by a nurse."                                                                                                            
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1.  AS 08.68 is amended by adding a new section to article 6 to read:                                    
05            Sec. 08.68.396. Administration of prescribed remedies and dietary                                          
06       supplements. (a) A registered nurse licensed under this chapter may, but shall not be                           
07       required to, administer a prescribed remedy or dietary supplement to a patient who is a                           
08       resident of a nursing facility, an assisted living home, or an Alaska Pioneers' Home.                             
09       The board shall adopt regulations that include safeguards that prevent the                                        
10       administration of a prescribed remedy or dietary supplement if the prescription is for                            
11       an amount of the remedy or supplement that is outside of the manufacturer's                                       
12       recommended dosage for a patient of the same physical condition.                                                  
13            (b)  In this section,                                                                                        
14                 (1)  "assisted living home" has the meaning given in AS 47.33.990;                                      

01                 (2)  "nursing facility" has the meaning given in AS 18.20.390;                                          
02                 (3)  "prescribed remedy or dietary supplement" includes over-the-                                       
03       counter, herbal, and vitamin remedies prescribed by a person authorized under this                                
04       title to prescribe the remedy or supplement.
