00 HOUSE BILL NO. 460 01 "An Act relating to the Alaska State Troopers and rural law enforcement and requiring 02 the Department of Public Safety to station a trooper in certain rural communities with 03 populations of 500 or more." 04 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 05 * Section 1. AS 18.65 is amended by adding a new section to read: 06 Sec. 18.65.083. Rural law enforcement unit; requirement for trooper 07 presence. (a) There is established in the Department of Public Safety, division of state 08 troopers, a rural law enforcement unit responsible for law enforcement in rural areas 09 of the state. 10 (b) The Department of Public Safety, division of state troopers, rural law 11 enforcement unit, shall station a state trooper in each rural community in the state. In 12 this subsection, 13 (1) "connected by road" does not include a connection by the Alaska 14 marine highway system;

01 (2) "rural community" means a city as defined in AS 29.71.800 or an 02 unincorporated community as defined in AS 29.60.140 with a population of at least 03 500 but 04 (A) less than 5,000 that is not connected by road or rail to 05 Anchorage or Fairbanks; or 06 (B) less than 2,000 that is connected by road or rail to 07 Anchorage or Fairbanks.
