00 CS FOR HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 11(FSH) am 01 Relating to Alaska Wild Salmon Week, June 30 - July 4, 2003. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS the State of Alaska has rebuilt salmon runs from levels during latter 04 territorial days when fisheries were under federal control; and 05 WHEREAS the Alaska wild salmon fishery today constitutes the largest commercial 06 wild salmon fishery in the world, employing more than 29,000 people and having a product 07 value of more than $272,000,000 in 2001; and 08 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon shall be managed by maximum sustained yield 09 principles to ensure future runs, on-going sport, commercial, and subsistence fishing industry, 10 and employment for Alaskans; and 11 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon is certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship 12 Council and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game; and 13 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon and its habitats are protected to maintain resource 14 productivity; and 15 WHEREAS the individual harvesting of Alaska wild salmon is an important Alaskan 16 tradition with immeasurable economic and personal benefits for hundreds of thousands of

01 Alaskans; and 02 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon have historically provided sustenance for 03 generations in our state through traditional subsistence and personal use harvest; and 04 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon is recognized as a healthy, nutritious food resource 05 rich in Omega 3 oils and other vital nutrients; and 06 WHEREAS the Alaska wild salmon fishery supports community economies 07 throughout Alaska; 08 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature designates the week of 09 June 30 - July 4, 2003, as Alaska Wild Salmon Week, and calls on the people of Alaska to 10 observe the week by participating in activities focusing around the catching and eating of 11 salmon. 12 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Frank Murkowski, 13 Governor; Ray Riutta, Executive Director, Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute; and to the 14 Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable Lisa Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and the Honorable 15 Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in Congress.
