CSHCR 11(FSH): Relating to Alaska Wild Salmon Day.

00 CS FOR HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 11(FSH) 01 Relating to Alaska Wild Salmon Day. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS the State of Alaska has rebuilt salmon runs from levels during latter 04 territorial days when fisheries were under federal control; and 05 WHEREAS the Alaska wild salmon fishery today constitutes the largest commercial 06 wild salmon fishery in the world, employing more than 29,000 people and having a product 07 value of more than $272,000,000 in 2001; and 08 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon shall be managed by maximum sustained yield 09 principles to ensure future runs, an on-going fishing industry, and employment for Alaskans; 10 and 11 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon is certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship 12 Council; and 13 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon and its habitats are protected to maintain resource 14 productivity; and 15 WHEREAS Alaska wild salmon is recognized as a healthy, nutritious food resource 16 rich in Omega 3 oils and other vital nutrients; and

01 WHEREAS the Alaska wild salmon fishery supports community economies 02 throughout Alaska; 03 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature designates July 2, 2003, as 04 Alaska Wild Salmon Day and calls on the people of Alaska to observe the day by 05 participating in activities focusing around the catching and eating of salmon. 06 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Frank Murkowski, 07 Governor; Ray Riutta, Executive Director, Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute; and to the 08 Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable Lisa Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and the Honorable 09 Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in Congress.
