00 SENATE BILL NO. 129 01 "An Act relating to a public high school competency examination; and providing for an 02 effective date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 14.03.075(a), added by sec. 1, ch. 58, SLA 1997, is amended to read: 05 (a) A pupil may not be issued a secondary school diploma unless, beginning 06 January 1, 2004, the pupil passes a competency examination in the areas of reading 07 and [,] English, and, beginning January 1, 2005, the pupil also passes a 08 competency examination in the area of mathematics. The department shall 09 determine the form and contents of the examination and shall score completed 10 examinations. A pupil who fails to pass the examination required under this 11 subsection and who is no longer in attendance shall receive a certificate of attendance 12 from the school district indicating the years of attendance and that the pupil has not 13 passed a competency examination or received a diploma. 14 * Sec. 2. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to

01 read: 02 TRANSITION: ACADEMIC ENDORSEMENT FOR PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL 03 GRADUATES. Beginning January 1, 2002, and ending December 31, 2003, each pupil shall 04 receive an endorsement on the pupil's diploma identifying the area or areas of the high school 05 competency examination described under AS 14.03.075(a) that the pupil successfully passes. 06 The Department of Education and Early Development shall establish by regulation uniform 07 standards for awarding an endorsement required under this section. 08 * Sec. 3. This Act takes effect January 1, 2002.
