00 CS FOR HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 20(MLV) 01 Relating to declaring September 11, 2002, as a Day of Remembrance. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, American 04 Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the World Trade Center North Tower in New York City 05 causing the loss of 92 lives onboard; and 06 WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, at 9:03 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, United 07 Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the World Trade Center South Tower causing the loss of 65 08 lives onboard; and 09 WHEREAS 343 New York City firefighters and 23 New York City police officers 10 were lost in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, many of whom 11 were climbing resolutely toward the upper floors of the buildings in an effort to stem the fire 12 and rescue building occupants when the towers collapsed; and 13 WHEREAS an estimated 2,840 lives were lost in the collapse of the World Trade 14 Center's North and South Towers; and 15 WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, at 9:43 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, hijacked 16 American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., causing the loss

01 of 189 lives; and 02 WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the 03 passengers onboard United Airlines Flight 93, with unprecedented courage, cogent 04 forethought, and a determined willingness, sacrificed the lives of 44 people to save the lives 05 of many others by forcing the hijacked jet to crash land in Western Pennsylvania; and 06 WHEREAS, in the aftermath of this national tragedy, hundreds more firefighters, 07 paramedics, police officers, members of the National Guard, and other emergency response 08 personnel, including many individuals from Alaska, have participated selflessly in the rescue 09 and cleanup efforts at the World Trade Center; and 10 WHEREAS the tragic events of September 11 remind us of the tremendous 11 contribution of these highly trained and dedicated individuals to our society and way of life; 12 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature honors the emergency service 13 providers, armed forces personnel, and citizen volunteers of Alaska for their courage, 14 sacrifice, and dedication in serving Alaskans; and be it 15 FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature respectfully requests the 16 governor to proclaim September 11, 2002, as a Day of Remembrance; and be it 17 FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature encourages all public and 18 private agencies and citizens of the state to show their appreciation for the state's emergency 19 service providers, armed forces personnel, and citizen volunteers on September 11, 2002.
