00HOUSE BILL NO. 405 01 "An Act relating to high school competency testing; and providing for an effective 02 date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 14.03.075(a) is repealed and reenacted to read: 05  (a) A pupil may not be issued a secondary school diploma unless the pupil 06 takes and passes a competency examination in the areas of reading, English, and 07 mathematics or by oral examination or academic achievement demonstrates 08 competence in reading, English, and mathematics, as required by the department. The 09 department shall determine the form and contents of the competency examination and 10 shall score completed examinations. 11 * Sec. 2. AS 14.03.075(b) is amended to read: 12  (b) A pupil who fails the examination offered [REQUIRED] under (a) of this 13 section may be reexamined. A reexamination may not be offered more often than 14 once every three months and must occur while [WITHIN THREE YEARS AFTER
