01 "An Act relating to conditions for filling vacancies in the office of United States                                     
02 senator; and providing for an effective date."                                                                          
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                               
04    * Section 1.  AS 15.40.010 is amended to read:                                                                     
05  Sec. 15.40.010.  Conditions and time of filling vacancy by appointment.                                             
06 When a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator, the governor, within 30                                   
07 days, shall appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy.   The person appointed by                                  
08 the governor shall be of the same political party as that which nominated the                                           
09 predecessor in office.   However, if the remainder of the term of the predecessor in                                   
10 office will expire or if the vacancy will be filled by a special election before the                                    
11  United States  senate will next meet, convene, or reconvene, the governor may not fill                               
12 the vacancy.                                                                                                            
13    * Sec. 2.  This Act takes effect immediately under AS 01.10.070(c).
