HCR 31: Relating to the use of Fort Greely as a correctional facility.

00HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 31 01 Relating to the use of Fort Greely as a correctional facility. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS Alaska prisons and jails are severely overcrowded and space to house new 04 inmates is unavailable; and 05 WHEREAS projections show the state's prison population will increase by over 200 06 new inmates each year; and 07 WHEREAS the state is under court order to decrease overcrowding and, in fact, has 08 been found to be in contempt of that order and is accruing fines on a monthly basis; and 09 WHEREAS the United States Department of Defense is closing Ft. Greely and is 10 seeking some entity to assume responsibility for the property upon base closure; and 11 WHEREAS a portion of the facilities at Ft. Greely may be suitable to house medium 12 or minimum security prison inmates; and 13 WHEREAS a prison facility would provide employment to local residents and mitigate 14 the effects of the base closure;

01 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature respectfully requests the 02 Governor to direct the commissioner of corrections to work with appropriate federal 03 authorities, residents of Delta Junction, and any other interested party to use some of the 04 property at Ft. Greely to provide adequate housing for the containment of medium and 05 minimum security prison inmates. 06 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Tony Knowles, Governor 07 of Alaska; and Margaret Pugh, Commissioner of Corrections.
