HCR 3: Relating to regional diversity in nominations of the judicial council to the Alaska Supreme Court and in activities of the Alaska Supreme Court.

00HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 3 01 Relating to regional diversity in nominations of the judicial council to the Alaska 02 Supreme Court and in activities of the Alaska Supreme Court. 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 WHEREAS having geographic diversity among members of the state supreme court 05 would address concerns of residents of the state's diverse localities; and 06 WHEREAS actively maintaining local chambers for members of the state supreme 07 court in the various judicial districts of the state will help promote geographic sensitivities in 08 regard to the business of the supreme court; and 09 WHEREAS developing a method of conducting the work of the supreme court that 10 allows members to reside in communities throughout the state may increase the pool of 11 individuals willing to serve on the court; and 12 WHEREAS increasing the activity of the supreme court in communities throughout 13 the state would lead to greater access to the judicial system for Alaskans; 14 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature respectfully requests the judicial

01 council to give due deference to regional diversity when making nominations to fill vacancies 02 on the supreme court; and be it 03 FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature respectfully requests the 04 chief justice of the Alaska Supreme Court to explore and implement policies that enable the 05 business of the court to be conducted from chambers located in the different judicial districts 06 in the state to enhance the responsiveness of the court. 07 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Allen T. Compton, Chief 08 Justice of the Supreme Court of Alaska.
