00HOUSE BILL NO. 224                                                                                                      
01 "An Act relating to the employment of prisoners."                                                                       
02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
03    * Section 1.  AS 33.30.191 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:                                            
04  (e)  In directing prisoners to work under this section, the commissioner                                              
05   (1)  shall require a prisoner assigned to community custody to be                                                    
06 employed, or assign the prisoner to work details or community work for, at least 35                                     
07 hours a week;                                                                                                           
08   (2)  may not assign a prisoner classified as                                                                         
09   (A)  minimum custody to a work detail outside of a correctional                                                     
10 facility unless the work detail is supervised by at least one staff member;                                             
11   (B)  medium custody to a work detail outside of a correctional                                                      
12 facility unless the work detail is supervised by at least one armed correctional                                        
13 officer for every five prisoners in the work detail;                                                                    
14   (C)  close custody to a work detail outside of a correctional                                                       

01 facility unless the work detail is supervised by at least two armed correctional                                        
02 officers for every five prisoners in the work detail.
