00SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 3 01 Relating to the conversion of the Naval Air Facility in Adak. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE: 03 WHEREAS the closure of the Naval Air Facility in Adak, Alaska, is anticipated to 04 occur in 1995; and 05 WHEREAS the land and existing infrastructure of the facility could be used after the 06 closure to benefit people and businesses in the state, as well as to serve the long-term interests 07 of the state and the federal government; and 08 WHEREAS the closure of the facility presents a unique opportunity to develop a new 09 community for the western Aleutians, to promote commercial ventures, and to use the existing 10 land and infrastructure for community purposes; and 11 WHEREAS, unless appropriate steps are taken immediately to preserve the buildings 12 and other infrastructure from damage by wind and moisture, the future use of the existing 13 infrastructure and the development of the Adak community will be jeopardized; 14 BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate supports the conversion of the Naval Air Facility

01 in Adak, Alaska, into a facility that can be used beneficially by the citizens of the western 02 Aleutians; and be it 03 FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate respectfully requests the United States 04 Department of Defense to 05 (1) take effective and timely measures to preserve the infrastructure that 06 constitutes the Naval Air Facility in Adak, Alaska; 07 (2) work closely with all federal and state agencies, the Department of the 08 Navy, and the Aleut Corporation regarding the future use of the facility after its closure; 09 (3) designate in a timely manner an authority, preferably the Aleut Corporation, 10 for developing the future use of the property constituting the facility; and 11 (4) arrange for the transfer of the property that constitutes the facility to the 12 Aleut Corporation as part of the corporation's entitlement under 43 U.S.C. 1601 - 1641 13 (Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act). 14 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the 15 United States; to the Honorable Al Gore, Jr., Vice-President of the United States and 16 President of the U.S. Senate; the Honorable Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the U.S. House of 17 Representatives; the Honorable William J. Perry, Secretary of Defense; the Honorable John 18 H. Dalton, Secretary of the Navy; the Honorable Alan J. Dixon, Chair of the Defense Base 19 Closure and Realignment Commission; and to the Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable 20 Frank Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and the Honorable Don Young, U.S. Representative, 21 members of the Alaska delegation in Congress.
