00SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 29 01 Requesting the Congress to clarify that the Reindeer Industry Act of 1937 no 02 longer applies in the State of Alaska. 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 WHEREAS the State of Alaska entered into the Union on an equal footing with all 05 other states, and the Statehood Compact specifically granted authority over fish and wildlife 06 to the State of Alaska; and 07 WHEREAS the State of Alaska is the only state subject to a federally imposed policy 08 barring the ownership of reindeer based on race; and 09 WHEREAS the Congress and the President of the United States are presently 10 embarking on a campaign to return rights and authority to the states; and 11 WHEREAS federal laws applicable to the Territory of Alaska do not necessarily apply 12 to the State of Alaska; and 13 WHEREAS the Reindeer Industry Act of 1937 was enacted when Alaska was a 14 territory and became ineffective upon statehood;
01 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature respectfully requests the U.S. 02 Congress to clarify that the Reindeer Industry Act of 1937 does not apply in the State of 03 Alaska. 04 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Al Gore, Jr., Vice-President 05 of the United States and President of the U.S. Senate; the Honorable Strom Thurmond, 06 President Pro Tempore of the U.S. Senate; the Honorable Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the U.S. 07 House of Representatives; and to the Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable Frank 08 Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and the Honorable Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of 09 the Alaska delegation in Congress.
