00SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 18 01 Honoring the military veterans of World War II and commemorating the 50th 02 anniversary of the end of World War II. 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 WHEREAS this year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II; and 05 WHEREAS Germany surrendered to the Allies on May 8, 1945, which is referred to 06 as V-E Day, or Victory in Europe Day; and 07 WHEREAS Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945, which is referred to as V-J Day, 08 or Victory over Japan Day, and this event marked the end of World War II; and 09 WHEREAS the veterans of World War II risked their lives so that the world would 10 remain free from political tyranny and oppression; and 11 WHEREAS many of the citizens of this state stepped forward to forfeit their lives, 12 making the ultimate sacrifice so that their children and families and other citizens of this 13 nation could remain free; 14 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature honors the persons who
01 defended our nation's freedom and democracy in World War II and recognizes their bravery 02 and sacrifice; and be it 03 FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature declares August 14, 1995, 04 World War II Memorial Day to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 05 II, and respectfully encourages the Governor to issue a proclamation calling on the people of 06 the state to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
