00HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 10 01 Relating to the conversion of the Naval Air Facility in Adak. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES: 03 WHEREAS the closure of the Naval Air Facility in Adak, Alaska, is anticipated to 04 occur in 1996; and 05 WHEREAS the land and existing infrastructure of the facility could be used after the 06 closure to benefit people and businesses in the state, as well as to serve the long-term interests 07 of the state and the federal government; and 08 WHEREAS the closure of the facility presents a unique opportunity to develop a new 09 community for the western Aleutians, to promote commercial ventures, and to use the existing 10 land and infrastructure for community purposes; and 11 WHEREAS, unless appropriate steps are taken immediately to preserve the buildings 12 and other infrastructure from damage by wind and moisture, the future use of the existing 13 infrastructure and the development of the Adak community will be jeopardized; 14 BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives supports the conversion of the

01 Naval Air Facility in Adak, Alaska, into a facility that can be used beneficially by the citizens 02 of the western Aleutians; and be it 03 FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives respectfully requests the 04 United States Department of the Navy, Department of the Interior, and Department of Defense 05 to 06 (1) take effective and timely measures to preserve the infrastructure that 07 constitutes the Naval Air Facility in Adak, Alaska; 08 (2) work closely with all federal and state agencies and the Aleut Corporation 09 regarding the future use of the facility after its closure; 10 (3) designate in a timely manner an authority, preferably the Aleut Corporation, 11 for developing the future use of the property constituting the facility; and 12 (4) arrange for the transfer of the property that constitutes the facility to the 13 Aleut Corporation as part of the corporation's entitlement under 43 U.S.C. 1601 - 1641 14 (Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act). 15 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the 16 United States; to the Honorable Al Gore, Jr., Vice-President of the United States and 17 President of the U.S. Senate; the Honorable Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the U.S. House of 18 Representatives; the Honorable William J. Perry, Secretary of Defense; the Honorable John 19 H. Dalton, Secretary of the Navy; the Honorable Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of the Interior; the 20 Honorable Alan J. Dixon, Chair of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission; 21 and to the Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable Frank Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and 22 the Honorable Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in 23 Congress.
