00CS FOR HOUSE BILL NO. 382(STA) 01 "An Act relating to the Board of Dispensing Opticians; and providing for an 02 effective date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 08.03.010(c)(11) is amended to read: 05  (11) Board of Dispensing Opticians (AS 08.71.010) -- June 30, 2002 06 [1996]; 07 * Sec. 2. AS 08.71.080 is amended to read: 08  Sec. 08.71.080. LICENSE REQUIRED. A person may not act as a dispensing 09 optician in the state unless the person is licensed under this chapter. In order to be 10 licensed under this chapter, a person shall pass an examination given by the board, 11 unless the person is eligible for licensing without examination under AS 08.71.145 12 [AS 08.71.150]. A license shall be issued for (1) the dispensing of contact lenses, or 13 (2) the dispensing of other lenses, eyeglasses, spectacles, artificial eyes, and their 14 appurtenances, or (3) both. The board shall by endorsement on the license designate

01 for which aspect of dispensing opticianry the license is issued. The board shall license 02 successful examinees. 03 * Sec. 3. AS 08.71.090 is amended to read: 04  Sec. 08.71.090. CONTENT OF EXAMINATION. To be licensed as a 05 dispensing optician, a person, unless eligible for licensing without examination under 06 AS 08.71.145 [AS 08.71.150,] shall pass an examination given by the board. At the 07 discretion of the board, the examination may test orally, in writing, or otherwise, 08 knowledge and skills in any or all of the following subjects: optics, anatomy, 09 laboratory technology, ophthalmic dispensing, contact lens technology, technical 10 mathematics and physics, and business concepts of optical dispensing. 11 * Sec. 4. AS 08.71.145 is amended to read: 12  Sec. 08.71.145. LICENSURE BY CREDENTIALS. A person with a valid 13 license as a dispensing optician from another state, territory, district, or possession of 14 the United States with licensing requirements substantially equivalent to or higher 15 than those of this state shall be issued a license without examination for those 16 professional areas in which the person is licensed upon payment of any fee and 17 documentation that the board may require by regulation. 18 * Sec. 5. AS 08.71.150 is repealed. 19 * Sec. 6. This Act takes effect immediately under AS 01.10.070(c).
